SARAH! HEPPELL

Photography portfolio site

Project/Concept:

I will create my personal photography portfolio site. This will be an area where I showcase a variety of photo work I have done.

Message/Tone:

The message will be for people to enjoy my photography and then they would potentially become a client of mine. The tone is serious but I would like to give it a creative edge.

Objectives

I’m building this site to promote myself and to have a site where my potential clients can see a display of my work. I want my audience to enjoy what they see, and contact me to set up an appointment for photographing them.

Audience

People of all ages are my audience. I photograph people of all ages so my site will need to cater to them all. I need to cater to all genders, ages, locations (but mainly upstate NY) lifestyles, etc.)

Assumptions and Research

LIKES: I enjoy the html layout of http://www.distinctphoto.com/

I tend to enjoy layouts that are more of a rectangular shape than square.
http://www.waltersandwalters.com/ I like how they incorporated a flash main page and then static images within. I don’t like their layout of images within the site though.
http://www.craigearl.co.uk/ I LOVE the tall rectangular cropped images which have higher saturation roll overs. I could incorporate the rectangular shape I want but break it up into cropped sections. I also enjoy the two tone background splitting it ¼ by ¾ .

DISLIKES: http://www.fashionphotographer.it/ I don’t like this site, you have to keep scrolling sideways to view the images I also don’t enjoy the gradient for the background. I dislike this site http://www.stanseatonphotography.co.uk/portraits/ It’s too simple looking and looks like it’s hard to maneuver through with all of the boxes and different text areas. I do like the name of the babies section. “Babies and Bumps”

I’d like to incorporate the rectangular shape of distinctphoto.com and the flash main page from waltersandwalters.com. Also for the main page another idea would be for static images cropped and having the rollover get more saturated or less, or some type of obvious roll over state. It could also have text on the image saying which gallery it’s going to take you to.

Font, Imagery, Programs:

I will use a clean crisp sans serif font, using my own imagery broken up into different organized sections, and I will use photoshop and dreamweaver to create my final product. If I incorporate flash I will need Adobe Flash, too. I may dabble in Highsliding, So the contact and about me sections hanging out on the top right corner of the main page will allow the user to click on and off for the information. I would like to experiment with PHP and add a contact section for clients to contact me.

Technical Considerations

I will host my photography site on my own server space and use sarahheppell.com I may use a sub domain to make the site www.photos.sarahheppell.com.
I will make the site 955×600ish, may vary once I dabble with some layout, but it will stick to that size.

Competitive Landscape:

Like I said before what worked for me and what didn’t. I like the option to view the images as thumbnails and then to allow them to get bigger by choice. Having the images all at a medium size already viewable gets kind of sloppy. (ex waltersandwalters.com). I like the idea of cropped vertical rectangles within a horizontal rectangle layout. Fun roll overs with text describing each gallery.
