    {Tutorial Tuesday} Fix your Facebook!

    Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Facebook is changing all the time, and it’s hard to keep up.  A week ago, they made some drastic changes to the way items are displayed in news feeds.  While on the surface, the changes were to personal profiles, it actually impacted business pages negatively.  Facebook wants to deliver the most relative content to you based on their algorithms. Unfortunately, computer code doesn’t always know what’s of interest.

[Fan Page owners] have noticed a drastic reduction in the number of interactions with [their] content.  Since this change, questions posted to create dialog between photographers barely had responses and our photography and post processing resources page was nearly silent. Other business owners noticed the same.

Posts by business pages are shown significantly less to fans on the “new Facebook.”  We discovered the reason: news feeds.  After Facebook added the “live ticker,” our posts no longer showed consistently in news feeds. If you own a business page through Facebook, the same is true for you.

Though Facebook could change again any moment, we want to educate you on how to see our content on the “new Facebook” and how you can teach others to see your information too.  Currently, the easiest way to see posts you want is to create a list on your profile.  It is easy to check instead of, or in addition to, what Facebook thinks you should read.

    To learn how others can get yours, here is a quick step by step guide to setting up lists.  It just takes a minute and allows you to control the content you receive! {text body/post ideas found here}

Step 1. Click on the Facebook Logo on the top left corner.
    Step 2.
    Click “More” next to “Lists.”

Step 3. Click on the “Create a List” button

Step 3.5 OR in my case, I installed the new timeline of facebook so if you did too
you can access the lists here: http://www.facebook.com/bookmarks/lists

    Step 4.
Name your list. In the “list name” box, type the name you want for the list.
I used “photography.” You could call it “Pages” or “Things I like” or “Sarah Heppell Photography” or whatever you wish.

    Step 5. Click “add friends.”

Step 6 & 7. You can add friends or pages. To add a page, such as Sarah Heppell Photgraphy, drop down and go to “Pages.”
All the pages you like will populate. Click on the ones you want to add to this list.

Step 8. Once selected , click “done.”

Once you have lists created, they become your new, customized “new feeds.”
It does take more work than before, but this way you won’t miss the news and posts from companies and friends that are important for you.
Just remember to click periodically on your lists to see what’s new.  Please share this post with your fans so they can add you to their lists too.

    {Tutorial Tuesday} Levels

    Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

This is the image I chose for my example of levels.
It’s kinda dark and could use a boost! I took it at an easter egg hunt in a nearby neighborhood.
She’s got a twin sister wearing the same exact thing that makes it look like a reflection! Thought it was neat.

    1. Open your image of choice and choose the Levels option from your Adjustments Panel.

2 & 3. The three triangles change different aspects of your image:
    •black = dark/shadows in your image
•gray = grays in your image
    •white = lights/highlights of the image.
    Experiment visually with the triangles.

4, 5 & 6. Change your RGB drop down to the red, adjust as needed, green, adjust as needed and the blue and adjust as needed.
It’s all a matter of what you like personally. But I try to keep it to the most natural it was when I shot it.

    Here is my final outcome!

    {Tutorial Tuesday} Vintage Action!

    Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Ok so, I have been told plenty of times that people admire the vintage feel on some of my imagery! I’d love to share a bit of how it’s done, just in a different way. I have actions that I’ve bought that I obviously can’t share and I have some actions that I’ve created, which I don’t know how to upload and share, but I might go out of business if I did share ;) hahaha just kidding! But anyway. I have a free action I found and you can download here! This will be KEY for this tutorial! :) So download the file (download button is on the right of the page) double click the zip file and then the atn files and they should automatically load in photoshop for you.

Choose which file you are going to make look a little dated and lets get started! :) This is the photo I picked, I haven’t had a chance to look at too many photos from the 1,000 island wedding I shot last weekend so I’ll use one from there!

So I went up to the window drop down and made sure my actions palette was open. I scrolled to the bottom to find the two actions I just installed. I expanded the “Light Vinage Action” (apparently they had a typo while saving the file or something) by clicking the arrow to the left and made it point down. then I could see every step the action plays for me. This is important!! I scrolled to the bottom of the action where it said “Flatten” and I clicked that layer and trashed it by clicking the garbage can. This will make your layers stay put when they’re done playing and you can alter your image more to your liking!!

ok so you have your image and your action all fixed up. scroll back up to the action title and select it. then press the play button

Wait a little bit to let the action play out, after it’s done you’ll see two additional layers in your layers palette.
Now I’ll show you what I did with the opacity of each layer in order to make mine how I liked it and you can play with yours to your taste.

Here is what my image looked like before and after I changed the opacity.

I also decided to use the brightness adjustment layer to brighten it up a touch cause I felt it was a bit too dark after that. You can do that as needed as well.

Voila! I hope this helped you achieve a similar vintage look you sometimes see in my work! Feel free to play around more than I chose to! Who knows what you will end up with! Also, feel free to post your outcomes as a comment below! I LOVE to see what you’re working on :D

Feel free to try out any of these free vintage actions here!
